Arts Recession

In tough times the easiest decision to make is to cut out discretionary spending on the arts - whether it is attending live performances of theatre or music or those too rare purchases of works that have struck a chord somewhere.

Yet it is the arts that helps us transcend the mundane bleakness of our economic woes. The relative cost/value of the arts is not measurable on the vulgar scales that weigh our monetary values.

In these times of penury, art is the best investment for the soul.

Every little bit counts

In terms of climate change the individual has a real role to play. For instance if every person on the planet saved one kilowatt hour of power a week from their daily lives the effect would be equivalent to eight billion units or eight million megawatt hours! In terms of conventional plants (say 250 MW capacity producing say 40,000 MWhours per week) this would avoid the carbon footprint of some 200 power plants!!!

For most of us in the western world the loss of one kilowatt hour of power is negligible yet the accumulated gain for the environment is very tangible.

Copenhagen Climate Change

What is at stake here is the survival of the human race!!

Climate change is just a marginal fluctuation of the thin biosphere that envelops this rocky planet. Our nearest neighbour, the moon, is a chilling reminder of what can happen to an unstable atmosphere.

World leaders are unfortunately incapable of avoiding such a catastrophy but at least can influence the marginal changes that may lead to lesser impacts.

Appeal must be made to rational analysis. The inevitable warming of the thin ecosphere has undeniable effect on life on this planet. That argument must be put to bed and planning for an increasingly unstable biosphere must be prioritised.

LHC

The LHC may lead to a proof of the existence of dimensions beyond those of space time. This could prove to be the most important discovery that humanity has made about its place in the universe.

Higgs Bosun

Richard Dawkins must be fuming at the mouth to hear this bosun being referred to as the "God Particle".
